RadioMONDO Reviews: Te Roopu Tangai

An amazing collection of Maori songs. I took off a half star because, even though these are traditional hakas, over time and missionary meddling some have been given "western" arrangements that incorporate some summer camp sing-a-long style acoustic guitar. Otherwise, the a cappella chants and songs are pretty damn cool. All songs were performed by kids from the Lyttelton High School in Gisborne, New Zealand.
I read that "Ka Mate Ka Mate" is the fight song of the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team.

The piece above isn't really new. I started it in 2003, wasn't happy with it, put it away. I just added some more stuff to the left side to balance it out. I'm still not sure i like it though. I think i went a little crazy with the paint and the gel texture. i think i'll leave it alone now.      It a fairly large piece for me, about 9.5X10.5 inches, and, because i worked on it over a long period of time, my focus on the subject matter changed a couple of times. I recall thinking about how christianity was used as a tool to control African slaves by replacing the old deities with a new ideal that, essentially, looked like the masters. Album Cover Album: Redesigned

  I recently bought a new, redesigned copy of the Album Cover Album by Storm Thorgersen and Roger Dean because my original 1977 edition was coming apart from it's glued-in spine and I found a new, hardcover copy on Amazon for $0.99. First, The Cons: For all it's touted redesign this book suffers slightly from it. The axiom "If it ain't broke don't fix it." applies aptly here as the original has larger images on pages with more than one cover displayed. The new editions images may seem sharper and the colors look to have been corrected (though a little too much contrast in some) but I'm at a loss as to why they were reduced in size by about 10%. The type redesign is "prettier" but less legible as the font is too light to stand out on the neutral gray background. It also baffles me that, as a book on design by designers, all the individual design credits are set so small and in an even lighter font as to render them insignificant. A...

My Left Foot. My Right Hook.

Okay, so today was like every other. Nothing special going on, I went to work at the kitchen this morning then to my job as a security guard. Then things went wrong. About 4:25 I go outside with two co-workers as they are leaving work because I wanted to get my nametag and security key that I'd left in my car. I see a car coming up the wrong way on the one-way driveway in front of the building as I'm walking down the drive to the parking lot. This happens often as people think it's a shortcut to Military Road. Usually I just wave them down, explain the situation and they turn around a leave through the lot's exit. Not this guy though. Instead he pulls right up on me and, as I try to sidestep away from his car, he turns slightly towards me at which point I'm yelling for him to stop and I bang my fist on the hood of the car. He finally stops but I then realise I can move because my left foot is under his tire! Then I start yelling, "Get off my foot!" about...
