Cover Girls

Design by Guy Mondo/StudioMONDO My latest time wasting project is making a list of album covers in my collection featuring photos of women I think are attractive. Yeah, that's right, I don't have anything better to do right now. (Note: I just figured out that you need to be a member to view my lists so I guess I'll have to post a few of my favorites here in the future.) RadioMONDO Reviews: The Neville Bros. "Yellow Moon"

Image
Today's deal was bought at the Georgia Avenue Thrift Store , of course, for a mere $1.91. This is a very, very good album from the Nevilles. It's quite a departure from their Nawlins R&B roots largely due to Daniel Lanois ' dark, Southern Gothic production. This is the imaginary soundtrack to the Crescent City of Anne Rice and Barry Gifford aided and abetted by Brian Eno most of the songs have an ambience that, by turns, is both thought provoking and beautiful. Aaron Neville 's voice is powerful, plaintative, and at times almost ethereal. Almost all of the songs were written by the Neville Bothers but they also cover Link Wray 's " Fire and Brimstone ", the bluegrass standard " Will the Circle Be Unbroken ", Sam Cooke 's " A Change is Gonna Come ", and two Bob Dylan songs, " With God on Our Side " and " The Ballad of Hollis Brown ". The only downside to this record is the final track, " Wild Injuns ...

The StudioMONDO Test Kitchen

Image
"Lilith" by Guy Mondo, 1996 Quite a few of my friends, family and acquaintances have made the assumption that I am a good cook based on the fact that I'm a single guy who cooks his own meals rather than buying prepared foods or take-away. Truth is I'm not that good. It's just that the few things I do cook I do well and I'm creative with ingredients because, if I'm using a recipe, it's a good bet that I don't have half of the ingredients it calls for. Plus, I can be lazy and/or impatient. I find that the friends that think I'm amazing in the kitchen are, generally, people that may be impressed by my working for Carla Hall . The thing is is that I don't work in Carla's kitchen, I handle equipment and deliveries and such for her. Occasionally, I've done some prep work and once made a boat load of cookies for her but mostly I drive "Moby, Van From Hell". The point I'm trying to get to is that a lot of people ask me for r...

Meanwhile...

Because I haven't had time to update lately I thought this video would make an entertaining placeholder until I could think of something better to post. Now I'm off to see if I just need to change the bulb in my car's headlamp of if I need to replace the flasher... StudioMONDO Record Collection Update

Image
For the last two years I have been cataloging my record collection at an online site called Rate Your Music . The site's main purpose is to make a database of every piece of recorded music in the world by relying on collectors to supply all the information. It also encourages collectors to rate and review music. I think this is the best thing ever. Whenever I have some spare time, especially late at night when I can't sleep, I add entries from my collect to my page there. Since I have a scanner I also upload cover images, too. So far I have cataloged 1,261 records (on vinyl) and I haven't started listing my collection of "Various Artists" on vinyl, 7" and 12" singles, cassette tapes, Evatone Soundsheets, 8-tracks, and the who-knows-how-many CDs I own. A nice feature of the site is the " Visualize " link that shows your collection as thumbnails of each LP cover in your collection. There is also a widget that updates tiny cover as they are adde...

RadioMONDO Reviews: YMO "Tighten Up"

Image
I used to watch Soul Train with an almost religious dedication. I doubt that I ever missed an episode until the last season when I got a job that required my attendance on Saturdays. One show stands out because of the goofy oddity of it. It was the appearance of Yellow Magic Orchestra . They were one of few non-black artists, and one of only two Japanese groups (the other being Hiroshima ), to appear on the predominately-black program performing a cover (albeit badly lip-synced) of Archie Bell & the Drells ' "Tighten Up". While the band played Haruomi Hosono jumped offstage to dance in the audience like a crazy tourist. Everybody looked like they were having a ball. I vaguely remember Don Cornelius trying to do a post-performance interview that was cut short because the band's English seemed limited. It was a highly entertaining few minutes. I spent years looking for the single of that song since it was not (up to that point) released on any of the LPs i had f...

Andy Samberg: Genius!

I don't get to watch SNL very often so I try to catch up with the episodes on the NBC site . What really keeps me coming back, though, are the digital shorts by Andy Samberg. From "The Chronicles of Narnia" and "Dick in a Box" to almost every short he's produced he is the most consistently funny SNL cast member in a long, long time. This is a classic example. Warning to the kiddies: This is the uncensored version and contains bad words and an inflatable dolphin.
